Endodontics - root canal therapy

The main purpose of root canal treatment (endodontic treatment) is to save a tooth that has been damaged badly due to decay, disease or injury.

Endodontic treatment is carried out at the dental practice. In the event of a more complex dental procedure involving the nerve of a tooth, we have Dr John Barbat (Specialist Endodontist) visiting our practice at least once a month. Dr Barbat flies his own plane to Bathurst and brings with him a wealth of knowledge and skill acquired over many years of practice both in Sydney and in London.

Symptoms of damage:

A diseased tooth may cause inflammation or infection.

The symptoms of a damaged or diseased tooth may include:

• Sensitivity to hot and cold drinks and foods
• Pain when biting or chewing
• Loosening of the tooth
• Swelling of the gum near the affected tooth
• Oozing of pus surrounding the affected tooth
• Facial swelling.

Sometimes, a tooth may become damaged or diseased without presenting any symptoms. In these cases, the problem is usually diagnosed by x-rays during a dental check-up or treatment for other dental concerns.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding with a surgical or invasive procedure, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
